Understanding your oral health starts with clear, accessible information. The videos on this page walk you through two of the most important topics in periodontal care: what gum disease is and how it develops, and how LANAP laser therapy addresses it without traditional surgical cutting. Whether you are newly referred or have been managing a periodontal condition for some time, these resources are here to help you arrive at your appointment informed and confident. Our About Us page offers additional background on our practice and our team.
At Rockland Dental Specialists in New City, NY, our periodontists and implant specialists bring 24+ years of combined experience to every patient. Dr. Shalom Mintz leads both videos, drawing on his background in periodontics and implantology to explain these conditions in plain terms. Our goal is to make sure you feel prepared before you ever walk through our door.
What is Gum Disease?
Not all bacteria in the mouth is bad, but some types can cause serious dental problems. Learn more on how to prevent gum disease from forming and how to promote a healthy and happy mouth from Rockland Dental Specialist’s Dr. Shalom Mintz.
Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is an infection of the tissues around your teeth that hold them in place. It typically begins as gingivitis inflammation caused by plaque accumulation along the gumline and can progress to periodontitis if left untreated. At that stage, the infection begins to damage the bone and connective tissue supporting your teeth. Research published in the National Library of Medicine confirms that early intervention leads to significantly better clinical outcomes, including reduced pocket depth and attachment loss. The video above covers the biological process behind gum disease and the daily habits that may help prevent it from advancing.
LANAP
High-tech laser treatment allows Dr. Mintz to efficiently kill the bacteria, rather than just disturb them while cutting gums. The LANAP enables a dental specialist to really get into the nooks and crannies to entirely destroy unwanted bacteria accurately and painlessly.
LANAP, or Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure, is an FDA-cleared approach to treating periodontal disease using a targeted laser rather than a scalpel. The laser selectively removes diseased tissue while preserving healthy gum tissue, and it promotes the formation of a stable blood clot that supports tissue reattachment and regeneration.
Patients who are candidates for laser surgery often appreciate that there are no incisions or sutures involved, and recovery is typically more comfortable compared to traditional gum surgery. A 2023 peer-reviewed study in Diagnostics found that LANAP was associated with greater reductions in periodontal pocket depth and improved clinical outcomes compared to scaling and root planing alone.
Is LANAP Right for You?
Candidacy for LANAP depends on the stage and severity of your periodontal disease, as well as your overall health history. During your consultation, our team will perform a thorough periodontal evaluation, including periodontal charting, to determine which treatment path is most appropriate for your situation. Many patients who come to us for dental implants also benefit from periodontal treatment first to ensure a stable foundation for implant placement.
