Regenerative Procedures
When gum disease progresses beyond what routine care can address, the structures holding your teeth in place begin to break down. Bone loss, deteriorating gum tissue, and compromised tooth roots are not simply cosmetic concerns. Without treatment, this damage threatens the long-term stability of your teeth and, in many cases, your candidacy for dental implants. Regenerative procedures give the body the support it needs to rebuild those lost structures, restoring a healthier foundation for your smile.
At Rockland Dental Specialists, our periodontists and implant specialists take a precise, patient-centered approach to periodontal care. Led by Dr. Shalom Mintz, who is board-certified in periodontics and implantology, our team draws on over 24 years of combined experience to evaluate each patient’s unique level of bone and tissue loss and recommend the regenerative approach best suited to their needs.
What Are Regenerative Procedures?
Regenerative procedures are surgical treatments designed to restore bone and soft tissue that have been lost due to periodontal disease. When bacteria penetrate deep below the gumline, they form pockets around the roots of teeth and begin destroying the supporting structures. Regenerative techniques work by creating an environment in which the body can regrow bone, cementum, and the periodontal ligament that attaches your teeth to the jawbone.
According to the American Academy of Periodontology, regenerative procedures can reverse some of the damage caused by periodontal disease by encouraging natural tissue and bone growth in areas that have been compromised. The goal is not just to stop the disease but to restore a stable, functional structure around existing teeth.
Bone Grafting
Bone grafting is one of the most common regenerative approaches. When significant bone volume has been lost around the roots of teeth or in preparation for implant placement, bone graft material is placed in the affected area to stimulate regrowth. Our team uses advanced bone grafting materials and techniques to encourage the body to integrate the graft and produce new, healthy bone over time. This procedure is often a critical step for patients whose bone loss would otherwise prevent successful implant placement.
Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF)
Platelet-rich fibrin is a regenerative tool derived from the patient’s own blood. The blood is processed to concentrate platelets and growth factors, which are then applied to the surgical site. PRF accelerates healing, reduces inflammation, and supports the regeneration of both bone and soft tissue. Because it comes from the patient’s own body, it integrates naturally and carries a low risk of adverse reactions. Our periodontists and implant specialists frequently incorporate PRF into regenerative and implant procedures to optimize outcomes.
Osseous Surgery
Osseous surgery, also known as pocket reduction surgery, involves reshaping the bone around affected teeth to eliminate the deep pockets where bacteria accumulate. During this procedure, our team carefully removes diseased tissue, smooths irregular bone surfaces, and repositions the gum to fit more snugly around the tooth. This reduces the space where harmful bacteria can harbor and allows the surrounding bone to heal in a more favorable position. When combined with grafting, osseous surgery can be a powerful approach for halting bone loss and improving the long-term prognosis of affected teeth.
What to Expect After Treatment
Recovery from regenerative procedures is manageable for most patients. Your first follow-up appointment typically occurs within two weeks after surgery, and a second follow-up usually takes place around eight to ten weeks post-surgery. For the first year following periodontal surgery, we typically see patients every three months to monitor healing and ensure the regenerated tissue and bone are responding well. After that first year, patients often alternate visits every three months between our office and their general dentist. Our team remains available to answer questions and address any concerns throughout the recovery process.
Candidates for regenerative procedures include patients with moderate to advanced periodontal disease, those preparing for gingival grafting or implant placement, and individuals who have experienced significant bone loss around one or more teeth. A thorough evaluation, including imaging, helps our periodontists and implant specialists determine the most appropriate course of care.
